Pastoral Year Parish: St. Rita, Long Island City

The Diocese of Brooklyn is a church of many immigrants, some new and some who have been here for a number of years. I see Brooklyn as a "missionary land"; a land in which I can give my life for the people who desire to have the Good News shared with them.

I entered Priestly Formation in 2006; and currently I am preparing for the priesthood for the Diocese of Brooklyn at the Redemptoris Mater Seminary in Kearny, New Jersey. My home parish is Saint Rita’s in Long Island City.

To be a seminarian, one must be a normal person. The discernment process helps a man to understanding the calling through prayer, Mass, confession, studies and formation. Formation is a journey we walk with others, namely seminarians and priests.

I was born in Heredia Costa Rica, and I believe that God has led me to Brooklyn. I have a degree in Engineering in Computer Science; and after obtaining my degree I began to work developing software for several companies. Over time I began to discern God’s call for me. For a man thinking about priesthood, he must be a man willing to pray and to come to Mass. I would encourage him to speak with a priest; and begin to read the lives of some of the saints of the Church.

I only want to add a word of encouragement for those thinking of joining the priesthood. Courage! Do not be afraid of becoming a "servant" for the Kingdom of God.
